"The Tampa Bay Rays officially announced their new free agent acquisitions of outfielder Johnny Damon and designated hitter Manny Ramirez Tuesday afternoon in a press conference.
"It's an exciting day for the Rays organization," Rays executive VP Andrew Friedman said.
Ramirez, who will make $2 million, is expected to be the full-time designated hitter. Damon, who will earn a base salary of $5.25 million, will likely be the primary leftfielder and potential leadoff hitter; Manager Joe Maddon said he hasn't set settled on a batting order yet.
The two veteran hitters were teammates with the Red Sox from 2002-2005 and led them to the 2004 World Series title.
"We're baaaack," Ramirez said smiling as he took the stage.
"Yes, we are back," Damon said.
Quipped Damon: "Back together."
Both Friedman and Maddon lauded what both Ramirez and Damon could bring both on - and off-the-field in terms of leadership, especially with their proven careers in the American League East and World Series."
