Injured trio could be back by weekend

"The Buffalo Sabres moved closer to full strength Monday when winger Jason Pominville and defensemen Craig Rivet and Shaone Morrisonn survived practice without any headaches, shoulder problems or strained muscles. All three could be in the lineup this weekend.

Pominville was awaiting results from a neurological-psychological exam Monday before ramping up his workouts. The next step for the winger would be getting cleared for contact. He has not been banged around since he suffered a concussion when Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson drilled him into the boards Oct. 11.

"I've been skating pretty hard," Pominville said. "It's getting better and better. The tough part I've been able to gauge is that I haven't been able to do any battle drills with the guys. Obviously, it's a big part of the game. ... Once I'm able to do that, I'll know more about where I'm at."

Sabres coach Lindy Ruff did not say when the three veterans would return. They are not likely to play tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers, but they could be ready when Buffalo visits Atlanta and Dallas later this week. The Sabres already have used all eight defensemen they kept to start the season.

Rivet feared he re-injured his shoulder Friday night against Ottawa but realized later he suffered a stinger. He was scratched for Buffalo's win over New Jersey and was still sore Monday. He'll likely watch tonight's game against Philly while rookie Mike Weber plays his second straight game.

Morrisonn hasn't played since Oct. 13, when he suffered a groin injury in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Devils. Chris Butler has played well in his place. Morrisonn, who began skating last week and intensified his workout Monday, was paired with Rivet during practice in HSBC Arena.

"It's only been a week and a bit," Morrisonn said. "It's nice to be back. I skated in Atlanta and New Jersey, so it's not the first time I've been on the ice. Compared to those couple of times, it's 100 times better.""
