"The Indians have a deal in place that will bring them right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez from Colorado for right-handers Alex White, Joe Gardner, first baseman Matt McBride and left-hander Drew Pomeranz as a player to be named. The deal is contingent on Jimenez passing a physical sometime Sunday.
The Rockies did confirm the trade.
"This was a very difficult decision for us to make, but our focus with this deal was to make our team better in the very near future and we feel like we were able to do that in this situation," Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd said. "We believe the timing of this deal also allowed us to maximize the value we were able to get in return."
The Indians said they would not comment until they got the results of Jimenez's physical. They did confirm sending veteran second baseman Orlando Cabrera to the Giants for outfielder Thomas Neal after their 5-2 victory on Saturday night. Neal is playing at Class AAA Fresno.
Jimenez started Saturday night against San Diego, but left after one inning and 45 pitches. He hugged teammates in the dugout after he left the mound. Why he was allowed to start Saturday's game is a question that has yet to be answered. Jimenez allowed a two-run double to Ryan Ludwick, who has also been rumored to be headed the Indians' way in a trade.
The trade started to gain momentum early Saturday, but talks have been going on for quite a while. The Rockies were looking for a big haul of prospects in order to trade Jimenez, who won 19 games last year, but has pitched only so-so this year.
Pomeranz, the Indians' No.1 pick last year, was scheduled to start Saturday night for Class AA Akron. He was scratched from that start. White, the No.1 pick from 2009, was scheduled to pitch a rehab inning at Akron, but was scratched as well. "
