The Indians played the Tigers in the finale of a three-game series Wednesday. Here is a capsule look from The Plain Dealer reporter Dennis Manoloff:

Game: 47.

Opponent: Tigers.

Location: Progressive Field, Cleveland.

Time of day: Afternoon.

Time elapsed: 5 hours, 16 minutes.

Result: Indians 11, Tigers 10 (13 innings).

Records: Indians 22-25, Tigers 27-15.

Scoreboard watch: The Indians swept a three-game series to pull within 7 1/2 games of the first-place Tigers in the AL Central.

The sweep was shocking given the state of the two clubs entering the opener Monday. Detroit had won the first six of its trip and was riding an 11-game road winning streak. Cleveland had lost four in a row, including a three-game beat-down by Oakland over the weekend at Progressive Field.

The Tribe didn't save its season by sweeping the Tigers, but it kept the division in focus. A 7 1/2-game deficit is large enough; if the Tigers had swept to make it 13 1/2 in May, the Tribe might have been relegated.

The Indians are 14-9 against the AL Central, having won six straight and 10 of 12.

Matching victory totals: The Indians are 4-1 against the Tigers after going 4-15 against them last season. (The Indians are 3-0 against the Tigers in Cleveland after going 1-9 against them in Cleveland last season.)

The Indians completed their first three-game sweep of Detroit since May 22-24, 2012, at Progressive Field. They had not posted a series victory over the Tigers since May 10-12, 2013, at Detroit (2-1); they had not done so in Cleveland since July 24-26, 2012 (2-1).
