The Indians have placed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list and recalled shortstop Juan Diaz from Class AAA Columbus.

Cabrera strained (tore) his right quadriceps muscle Monday night running out ground ball in the fifth inning against the Yankees. He'd been playing with the injury for several weeks.

The two-time All-Star returned to Cleveland on Tuesday for an MRI.

After Monday's game, manager Terry Francona said Mike Aviles would replace Cabrera at shortstop. Diaz was recalled for protection.

Diaz, who will wear No.35, was hitting .211 (40-for-190) with eight doubles, four homers and 18 RBI in 52 games at Columbus. He made his big league debut last year, hitting .267 (4-for-15) in five games with the Tribe when Cabrera couldn't play because of a sore hamstring.
