The Jets’ quarterback bout will head into round three. Mark Sanchez couldn’t deliver a knockout punch in the team’s second preseason game keeping the door open for Geno Smith to fight again in the third preseason game against the Giants.

Smith’s stock likely improved without taking a snap as he sat on the sideline Saturday night with his injured ankle while Sanchez played three quarters in Gang Green’s 37-13 win over the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium. Sanchez pieced together a typical up-and-down performance: he put together solid scoring drives and then followed it up with the sort of errors that put him on the brink of losing his job.

Rex Ryan said after the game that the competition would continue into the third preseason game.

“Yeah absolutely” Ryan said. “We’ll see how it goes. We’re not willing to name a starting quarterback right now.”

That wasn’t much of a surprise to Sanchez.

“I feel like with Geno not playing that this was going to go on until he got another shot for sure” Sanchez said.

It was classic Sanchez on Saturday night giving Jets fans reason to believe then reminding them of his habit for making critical mistakes.

Sanchez began the game with a six-play 59-yard drive in which he completed all three of his pass attempts including a 23-yard TD to Jeff Cumberland.

His second drive was aided by a 28-yard gain by Bilal Powell and resulted in a field goal.

On his third drive in the red zone Sanchez drew sarcastic applause from the crowd when he threw a ball into the ground a smart play compared to what he does too often: forcing balls into coverage. It took only two more plays for him to do just that as his pass from the 3 intended for Kellen Winslow in the end zone was picked off.
