If not traded, could Bell accept arbitration to remain a Padre?

"Heath Bell still thinks he is going to be traded.

And Texas is said to still be hot on the trail of the Padres closer, although the Rangers partially addressed their bullpen needs Saturday by acquiring Orioles reliever Koji Uehara.

But what happens if the deadline passes at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon (San Diego time) and Bell is still a Padre?

The No. 2 man on the Padres all-time list of saves leaders is a free agent at the end of the season.

And although the 33-year-old Bell has said he would take a "San Diego discount" to get a long-term contract from the Padres, there have been no talks on the subject since spring training.

If Bell is a Padre at the end of the season, the Padres could get two compensatory, first-round draft picks if the Padres offered him arbitration and Bell refused before signing with another team as a free agent.

Bell, however, could also accept salary arbitration. Under that scenario, Bell would likely get more from the Padres in a one-year arbitrated contract than he would make in a single season of a multi-year contract.

If presented salary arbitration with a chance to remain in San Diego, would Bell accept – costing the Padres two draft picks while saddling the club with a higher salary?

"I would really consider it," said the reliever.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals and Blue Jays have joined Texas in talks regarding Bell. The Angels, Yankees and Orioles are also said to have interest

Wade LeBlanc has flown in from Triple-A Tucson to make Dustin Moseley's scheduled start Sunday against the Rockies.

Although Moseley said he expects to make his next scheduled start, Padres manager Bud Black said he wasn't sure how long LeBlanc's third stint with the Padres this season will last.

Black said Moseley's left shoulder was still sore after it partially and temporarily dislocated last Tuesday night while he was pitching against the Diamondbacks at Petco Park.

Moseley incredibly returned to the mound after his left arm popped out of the joint and pitched four more innings. But the soreness related to the dislocation increased over the next two days and Moseley said his left shoulder is still weakened."
