"Vikings coach Leslie Frazier reiterated Wednesday that Brett Favre will start the season finale Sunday at Detroit as long as he passes his concussion tests and is cleared to play.
His replacement, Joe Webb, made several clutch plays Tuesday to help the Vikings beat the Eagles 24-14 in Philadelphia. Webb became the second Vikings rookie quarterback to win in his first NFL start.
Frazier praised Webb's performance and his poise, but he said Favre gives the team the best chance to win, if healthy.
"It's really not a hard decision for me," Frazier said. "Brett is a terrific player. We feel very comfortable when he's on the field that we have a great chance to win, so you always want to put the guy out there who is going to give you the best chance to win. If Brett is healthy, I think our entire team feels very confident that we have a great chance to win.
"Nothing against Joe. Joe's going to be a terrific player in our league, but if Brett is able to go, he'd be our starting quarterback."
Favre took the ImPACT concussion test again Thursday and failed it, according to a league source. Players who suffer concussions must pass a battery of tests before they are cleared to play.
Favre also remains on the injury report because of a shoulder sprain, but Frazier said "there are no inhibitions in that regard. Right now it's all based on the concussion."
Though Frazier said the decision is not a difficult one, he must weigh several factors. This is expected to be the final game of Favre's 20-year career. The 41-year-old might want a swan song, rather than have his career end on sack that caused a concussion."
