The Carolina Hurricanes have relieved head coach Kirk Muller of his coaching duties.

The team also dismissed assistant coaches John MacLean and Dave Lewis while reassigning goaltending coach Greg Stefan to the pro scouting department.

Assistant Coach Rod Brind'Amour will remain part of the coaching staff.

The coaching change marks the first major personnel move since the team appointed Ron Francis as executive vice president and general manager a week ago.

"We thank Kirk, John and Dave for their time and effort during the past three seasons,” said Francis in a statement. “Kirk and his staff worked very hard, but we feel that the team is in need of a fresh start at this time.”

Over three seasons behind the Hurricanes' bench Muller posted a coaching record of 80-80-27. It was his first head coaching position in the NHL.
