Holliday hopes to avoid DL

"Though all parties insist a move to the disabled list unlikely, left fielder Matt Holliday remains uncertain for the Cardinals' weekend series against the Colorado Rockies.

Holliday arrived at Petco Park on Wednesday morning still noticeably favoring the strained left quadriceps that has followed him for much of the last two weeks. He aggravated the condition while serving as designated hitter Sunday in Kansas City.

He did not appear in the three-game series against the San Diego Padres and did not include sprint work in a Wednesday pre-game workout with strength-and-conditioning coach Pete Prinzi.

"We'll see when we get there, but I hope to play in Colorado," Holliday said.

Manager Tony La Russa confirmed earlier this week that Holliday wouldn't play "at least" until Colorado.

General manager John Mozeliak insisted placing Holliday on the disabled list isn't being considered "unless you know something we don't know."

La Russa similarly played down a possible roster move but insisted the club would proceed with caution.

"We're going to rest him. We've got an off day tomorrow and see how he is Friday," La Russa said. "We're not going to push it. There's a lot of season left."

Missing Holliday, the Cardinals batted .255 with six RBIs for the series. They have scored 25 runs in the 10 games that Holliday has missed this season due to appendicitis and his recent injury.

Holliday first felt tightness in the leg after retreating for a fly ball during the team's last home stand. He missed two starts before returning to the lineup in Kansas City."
