In consecutive games over the weekend at Wrigley Field, left fielder Matt Holliday was removed in late innings because of a back injury the Cardinals did not want to aggravate as their No. 3 hitter attempts to play through the discomfort.
Holliday singled and walked in the Cardinals' 6-3 victory Sunday against the Cubs, but he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of the close game. On Saturday, manager Mike Matheny sent Adron Chambers in to run for Holliday in the ninth inning — voluntarily removing his former batting champ from the lineup for the extra innings that followed.
