With 14 minutes remaining, James Madison was up by 17 points, and it seemed as if the only thing Hofstra had ahead of it was a long trip home from Harrisonburg, Va.
Not so fast. Just over 71/2 minutes later, Jordan Allen sank two free throws -- and the Pride led by one.
But that was as good as it got for Hofstra Monday night in a 59-53 loss to the Dukes.
Zeke Upshaw had a three-pointer and a three-point play and Dion Nesmith added five points during that 18-0 run that gave Hofstra the lead with 6:27 remaining. But Ron Curry's layup and Charles Cooke's three-point play put the Dukes ahead 51-47 with 4:55 to play.
Upshaw responded with two free throws to make it a two-point game, but Curry (20 points, six assists) converted a three-point play and then hit two free throws to give the Dukes a 56-51 lead with 28 seconds left.
Upshaw had 15 points and Nesmith and Jamall Robinson each had 10 points and six rebounds for the Pride (8-18, 4-7 CAA). Nesmith added five assists.
Cooke had 15 points and Andre Nation added 13 for James Madison (9-16, 4-7), which ended the first half on a 17-5 run and began the second with an 8-2 run to grab a 42-26 lead. The subsequent 17-point lead was the Dukes' largest of the season in CAA play.
