Does it surprise anyone that Mariners ace Felix Hernandez was picked as the American League’s best pitcher by the league’s managers for Baseball America’s annual “best tools” survey?

Hernandez was the AL’s starting pitcher in the All-Star Game and enters Tuesday’s game against Atlanta with an 11-3 record and a league-leading 2.01 ERA. He also leads the league in WHIP (walks and hits per inning), ranks second in strikeouts and third in innings pitched. He could take the league lead in the later two categories after Tuesday’s game at Safeco Field.

Injured Yankees rookie Masahiro Tanaka was second, followed by Tacoma native and new A’s lefty Jon Lester.
