HBO documentary 'Derek Jeter 3K' doesn't show intimacy of Captain's interaction with family, friends

"If you have an undying love for Derek Jeter , then "Derek Jeter 3K," the new documentary from HBO , is going to be 56 minutes of fun for you. If you're looking to get close to the matinee idol shortstop and find out what happens in the inner recesses of his mind, the show could be disappointing.

"Derek Jeter 3K" has so many things that those who want to understand the life of the Yankees ' captain would want to know. He has a huge apartment on the upper East Side with views of both the East River and the Empire State Building . He has a personal chef who prepares his meals. Television star Minka Kelly , his girlfriend, hangs at his house in St. Petersburg , Fla. - something that neighbors call "St. Jetersburg" - and was permitted to do an interview for the film.

We get everything that leads up to the phenomenal day when he went 5-for-5, hit a home run for his 3,000th hit, and then won the game with a seeing-eye single. We see him felled by a calf injury. We see him working on his swing with instructional hitting guru Gary Denbo (probably the best footage of the film). We see him being congratulatory to the other members of the Double-A Trenton Thunder . But we also get an inside look at some of the angst.

We get to hear Jeter say that if he didn't get his 3,00th hit at the Stadium he'd "be disappointing people." We see him admit to thinking about a personal achievement after a career dedicated to team achievement. We see conflict, but it appears alongside grace under pressure.

Jeter has close friends over for lunch prepared by his chef before one of the games in his pursuit.

But we never get the intimacy that Jeter shares with his parents - he and his dad appear together a number of times but never affectionately - or with Kelly or really anybody except for the hug with Jorge Posada when he crosses the plate after the home run.

But maybe we've misjudged the constantly private Captain. Maybe "Derek Jeter 3K" is who he really is. And maybe, as he suggests, this is about the future.

"I was approached about the opportunity of doing this documentary. I said, 'I've never done this before. I don't know if I'm comfortable with it.' But I'm always jealous of the other players with their kids coming down to the clubhouse and on the field," Jeter said."
