The Angels continue to double their fun with twin aces leading their rotation. Dan Haren joined Jered Weaver with a 4-0 record to start the season, taking a shutout into the seventh inning of a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon. Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito did it for the San Francisco Giants last season, and things worked out well for that team.
"Certainly those two guys are off to a great start and setting the tone," Manager Mike Scioscia said of Weaver and Haren. "But it's going to take more than just Jered and Dan.
"There are things in our rotation that are very important to us and to have Jered and Dan be the lead dogs and set the tone for our rotation ... that's huge."
The victory completed a three-game sweep of the White Sox (the Angels' first since September 2005) and extended the Angels' winning streak to five games and nine of their past 11.
It has been built very much by the right arms of Haren and Weaver. Together, they are a combined 8-0 with a 1.23 ERA and have pitched in nine of the 10 victories. The rest of the staff is 2-5 with a 3.66 ERA.
Haren had not given up a run in 182/3 innings before the White Sox bunched four consecutive hits to produce their two runs in the seventh inning Sunday. That was the first time since the fourth inning of his first start this season (April 1 in Kansas City) that Haren had two runners on base at the same time.
"He's on a terrific roll," Scioscia said of Haren, who had not given up more than a run in a start this season before Sunday. "You can look at a lot of numbers but I don't think you have to look at a lot of numbers to know how well Dan is pitching.""
