"The drawing board, which Rich Harden has gone back to after most of his starts this season, can't have much room remaining for him to work out an answer to his sluggish performances. But he'll be back at it this week, trying to get opposing hitters to put the ball in play sooner and trying to get his pitch counts lower and trying to get deeper into games. That's been his goal since spring training. It's June now. Not even he seems to know where to turn next.Harden allowed four runs, three earned, in five long innings, and Tampa Bay pulled away late to salvage the series finale at Rangers Ballpark 9-5. The Rangers' lead in the AL West slipped to one-half game ahead of the Los Angeles Angels and one game ahead of Oakland."It's still not going the way I want it to go right now," Harden said. "I'm feeling good. I'm getting stronger, throwing more strikes, getting ahead of hitters. I'll turn this around."Harden threw 111 pitches, 15 of them to Reid Brignac in one fourth-inning at-bat. The Rays fouled off 28 pitches against Harden, went to three balls eight times and to a full count seven times.Despite the mountain of pitches, there were only two that were bona-fide mistakes -- changeups that John Jaso and Carlos Pena deposited into the right-field seats for homers in the third and fourth innings. The one thing Harden wants to do better is get ahead of hitters more consistently. He threw ball one to 12 of the 23 batters he faced. He also will study video to see if he's tipping his pitches, a problem he had last year."I've still got to make my pitches no matter what," Harden said. "That 15 at-bat cost me an inning there. They were just fouling pitches off, fouling pitches off. That's the way it goes."Manager Ron Washington said he has seen improvement from Harden since the season started. He isn't walking as many hitters and is forcing them to put the ball in play more.Washington said that Harden left the Rangers in a position to win Sunday and has done so much of the season. Harden (3-2) has started 12 games, and the Rangers have won eight of them."
