Jim Harbaugh recruited offensive tackle Jonathan Martin to Stanford and coached him for three seasons.

On Wednesday, the 49ers coach vouched for Martin’s character and referred to him as a “personal friend.”

Martin, a second-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2012, left the NFL team last week after allegedly being the victim of bullying from veteran guard Richie Incognito.

“As far as that situation, there’s only one thing I can intelligently comment on and that’s knowing Jonathan Martin,” Harbaugh said. “I know him to be a fine person and his family. (Martin was a) great contributor as a student and an athlete at Stanford, epitomizes the student-athlete model and a personal friend. I support Jonathan.”

Harbaugh declined to answer whether he has reached out to Martin in the past week. Martin, who attended Harvard-Westlake School in Southern California, enrolled at Stanford in 2008.
