Hamstring injury idles Jamal Lewis; Davis and Harrison may face Ravens

"The Browns face a frightening prospect Sunday in Baltimore: What if running back Jamal Lewis is unable to go against his former team and their top-ranked run defense?

Lewis suffered a hamstring injury in Denver, although it wasn't known until the injury report came out Wednesday afternoon. He sat out Wednesday's practice and will likely be listed as questionable when the designations are released on Friday.

Surely, Lewis will do everything possible to play against his former team. But if he can't go, rookie running back James Davis and Jerome Harrison, who've combined for 13 yards on seven carries, will share the load.

Davis, who was inactive in Denver with a shoulder injury, was back full-go in practice on Wednesday and will be ready to play. But he struggled in the opener, gaining five yards on four carries for a 1.3-yard average. He also caught three passes for four yards, admitting afterward that he needs to adjust to the speed of the game and know his assignments thoroughly so he can play faster.

Harrison, who sat out the opener with the knee injury, did not appear on the injury report Wednesday, but also struggled in his lone game against Denver, gaining eight yards on three carries for a 2.7-yard average. He also caught four passes for 24 yards, including a long of 15.

The Ravens are allowing just 41 rushing yards per game, and haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 37 games -- the NFL's longest current streak. Meanwhile, the Browns are 27th in rushing with an average of 71.5 yards.

Lewis, who averaged 5.2 against the Vikings, managed just 2.7 yards per carry in Denver, with a long gain of 12.

Womack, Hadnot idle: Guard Floyd Womack, who sprained his ankle in Denver, sat out Wednesday's practice, as did guard Rex Hadnot. But it was the first time Hadnot wasn't ruled out of the game by Wednesday. If Womack can't go, Hank Fraley -- who replaced him in Denver -- will probably start in his place.

"Rex is making some progress," said coach Eric Mangini. "I think there's a chance [Womack will play], but we'll just have to see as we go through the week."

Also, rookie center Alex Mack is on the report for the first time with a knee injury, but participated fully. Linebacker David Bowens (knee) and nose tackle Shaun Rogers (foot) were limited.

Wright fined: Cornerback Eric Wright confirmed a report on profootballtalk.com that he was fined $5,000 for wearing his pants above his knees.

The site reported Wright revealed the fine on his Twitter account (ithinkurwright) but then later deleted it for fearing of getting fined for the tweet.

On Wednesday, Wright said he'd never been fined before. Will he appeal?

"I'm not sure," he said. "For me, in my mind it's a league matter. They've got rules, they fined me, I'm just going to move on and turn my focus to Baltimore. That's all I can do.""
