Vancouver Canuck defenceman Dan Hamhuis, who missed five games in February because of a concussion suffered on an end-boards hit, escaped with just a scare Saturday afternoon when he was checked from behind by Los Angeles King Alexei Ponikarovsky.

Ponikarovsky shoved the back of Hamhuis's head, propelling the Canuck into the boards late in the second period of Vancouver's 3-1 National Hockey League win. Ponikarovsky was assessed only a minor penalty for boarding.

"It was dangerous," Hamhuis said. "My head didn't take any of the blow; I was able to kind of tuck it down.
