It was slated to be a matchup between two pitchers contending for the Cy Young Award. In one corner was the Phillies' Cole Hamels, arguably putting together his best regular season.
In the other was Johnny Cueto, the Reds' Tiant-esque righty whose style, flair and repertoire of pitches had him atop the league in wins (16) and ERA (2.47) headed into Thursday night's game at Citizens Bank Park.
What no one seemed to be expecting, however, was a visit from a third participant, namely, the rain. It was an unwelcome one at that.
