Dyke’s absence on Tuesday will cause surprise coming after his speech last week in which the chairman called on everyone in football to get behind England.

The FA points out that either the chairman or the chief executive/general secretary goes to represent the FA at internationals. Alex Horne the FA’s general secretary is head of the delegation for the trip to Ukraine.

The FA also emphasised that Dyke’s role is “part-time” but can clearly see the potential for embarrassment adding “we do not expect this situation will arise in the future”.
Dyke also missed the friendly against Scotland because he was on holiday.

England also travelled to Kiev on Sunday night without Daniel Sturridge whose slight thigh condition has forced the forward to return to Liverpool.
