Grant, ground game bog down

"For the final three quarters of the Green Bay Packers' 31-21 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday, they had zero net yards rushing. Zero yards in eight carries.

That's hardly the ascending run game the Packers expected to see this season with the the return of halfback Ryan Grant and the maturation of a young offensive line. In fact, in the last two games the Packers have been anything but productive, let alone dynamic, running the ball. Last week in their loss to Dallas they gained 84 yards on 21 carries.

And while Grant hasn't shown the explosiveness of last season because of a slowly healing hamstring injury, that didn't seem to matter much against Tampa Bay, because he didn't have any room to run after the first quarter.

"(Tampa Bay) got after us up front, with the running back and run-blocking units not in sync," coach Mike McCarthy said. "We need to get that corrected. That's two weeks in a row."

The question now is whether the Packers will make any personnel moves to juice up the run game, or whether they'll look for Grant's improving health and increased snaps in practice to get the timing and production back.

Among the personnel options is returning rookie guard Jason Sitton to the starting lineup now that he's back from a sprained knee. Sitton was starting at right guard when he sprained his knee in the Packers' exhibition game at Denver on Aug. 22 and returned to practice two weeks ago. On Sunday he was activated for the first time this season but didn't play.

The Packers liked Sitton in the starting lineup despite his inexperience because he added some bulk (317 pounds) and a nasty run-blocking mentality to the offensive line. If they give him a shot at starting this week, they'd probably move Jason Spitz from right guard to left, and sit left guard Daryn Colledge.

When asked if the Packers will consider such a move, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said: "I don't know that. We'll have to consider anything. We'll have to look - we're not going to panic, we're going to look at what went wrong and how we can hopefully get this thing back to where it needs to be."

Grant this season hasn't been the same back who last year rushed for 929 yards over the final 10 regular-season games. He missed the first week of training camp because of his extended contract negotiations, then injured his hamstring his first week back on the field and didn't return until the week of the exhibition finale.

He looked a little more explosive last week against Dallas, and then leading up to the Tampa Bay game he participated fully in practice every day for the first time this season. On Sunday, he started well enough, with gains of six and eight yards among his four carries on the Packers' game-opening touchdown drive and finished the first quarter with 27 yards on nine carries. Thereafter, he lost seven yards on his final six runs, and there was no way to tell if he was close to full strength because he had so li
