"Tom Glavine mentioned a couple of tasks that make his surgically repaired shoulder bark these days - lifting a gallon of milk from a top shelf … holding his new baby.
That's right. The 43-year-old Glavine and his wife Chris have a 4-week-old baby at home: a son Kienan Patrick whom they adopted. The Glavines had four children already - Amber, 14, by Glavine's previous marriage, Jonathan, 14, by Chris' previous marriage and two sons together, Peyton, 10, and Mason 8.
Glavine has a lot going on in his life other than trying to return from shoulder and elbow surgery. In that comeback department, though, his shoulder bounced back well enough from his simulated game Monday that he expects to pitch his scheduled minor league rehabilitation outing Saturday in Gwinnett.
Glavine said Chris was hoping they'd adopt a girl and thought that's what they had until an ultrasound proved otherwise. Glavine said after this, though, no more kids. He said if the itch comes again for a girl, he'll tell Chris, "You can wait for grandchildren."
Chris met the mother of their child by chance at a restaurant after she got back from visiting Tom in spring training. The Glavines were there for the birth.
"It's one of those things that makes you believe even more in divine intervention," Glavine said.
He also said when the mother met Chris, she didn't know who Tom Glavine was. So he knows the adoption was based on "seeing what we provide as a family."
Glavine is very involved in his kids' lives, coaching ice hockey, and they have a baseball infield as well as a multi-purpose sports court in their backyard.
"There's always something going on at our house," Glavine said. "It's fun. I enjoy it. (Chris) enjoys it. In the long run, it'll keep us young. It'll keep me in a car pool a long time. I can never say I'll be bored.""
