"Jason Giambi has been busy.
Over the past few weeks, he has opened his new Las Vegas club Vanity, been pictured hanging out with P. Diddy and former Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean, and celebrated his 39th birthday.
Saturday, he gave the Rockies and their fans a present, agreeing to return to Denver with a one-year contract worth roughly $1.7 million, pending a physical. Giambi will serve as a pinch hitter, while spelling Todd Helton at first base.
"I love it," Helton said Saturday. "He's a rock star."
Giambi's signing is multi-faceted. For starters, he was quite a reserve last season. After joining the Rockies on Sept. 1, he produced game-winning pinch hits in his first two games. He batted .292 with two home runs and 11 RBIs for Colorado, reaching base at a .405 clip.
"He never gives away an at-bat," Helton said.
Giambi meshed immediately in the Rockies' clubhouse. It was common to see him at his locker telling stories to Troy Tulowitzki, Garrett Atkins and Ryan Spilborghs, among others. At his club opening three weeks ago, Giambi told a few teammates that he was seriously considering returning to the Rockies."
