Getzlaf on mend after facial cut

"An injury to Ryan Getzlaf would fall under the category of Last Thing the Ducks Need Right Now.

The team has seemingly regrouped for the second half of the season and needs its big guns healthy to stay relevant in the standings.

Getzlaf's facial injury doesn't appear to have long-term implications, but he will undergo further tests today, according to a team spokesman.

Getzlaf was told to stay home Wednesday and keep the swelling down after he needed 10 stitches to close the cut, which sounded severe judging from Coach Randy Carlyle's description.

"There's quite a gash there," Carlyle said. "He had bleeding into his nasal cavity ... and he felt nauseous at times because of the blood draining into his stomach."

Carlyle said it was too early to determine when Getzlaf would be available. The Ducks play Friday vs. Philadelphia.

Getzlaf has been hindered by ankle and groin injuries in the past but those haven't looked as scary as Tuesday, when was struck by a shot from Phoenix captain Shane Doan that ramped off the stick of Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler early in the second period.

He immediately left the ice and did not return."
