Getting the ball to Roy Williams

"One of the classic Mike Martz route schemes is the deep dig (15-yard square-in). It's a concept designed to get the ball to new Bears wide receiver Roy Williams.

In the graphic linked to the left, we have the route drawn up in Posse personnel (three wide receivers, one tight end, one running back) versus a base nickel package (four defensive linemen, two linebackers, five defensive backs) in a Cover-2 alignment.

The key: Attack the middle of the field with Williams in the "dagger" combination.

Working against Cover-2, the Bears can force the Mike linebacker (M) to run the inside vertical seam with the slot receiver (W) on the clear-out 9 route (go route). This opens a hole in the defense for Williams (X) on a deep, inside breaking route.

Underneath, the Bears have created a "Hi-Lo" concept with the tight end (Y) running a quick crossing route that will force the nickel back to shorten his drop. This opens an even bigger throwing lane for quarterback Jay Cutler to hit Williams in the middle of the field."
