Gary Carter attends opening night

"Brain cancer didn't keep Gary Carter from Opening Day.

Carter, the head baseball coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida, made it to his team's first game last night, according to the Palm Beach Post.

The paper reported the 57-year-old Hall of Famer, who was diagnosed with brain cancer last May and whose condition worsened last month, talked to his players and told them, "Let's get a win tonight," before Palm Beach Atlantic defeated Lynn University, 3-2 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla.

"He wanted to be here for his guys, here for opening day," Carter's daughter Kimmy Bloemers told the paper. "It's a great day.""
