Young forward Mikko Rantanen is scheduled to be recalled by the Avalanche next week and make his NHL season debut Oct. 28 against the visiting Winnipeg Jets, Colorado general manager Joe Sakic said Thursday from Amalie Arena.

Rantanen, 19, started the season with the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League in what essentially is a conditioning assignment. He suffered a preseason ankle injury and the Avs wanted him to continue his recovery in the minors. Rantanen has played in San Antonio’s first two games and his expected to play in the next three before his call-up. He was the Avs’ 2015 first-round draft pick and 2015-16 AHL rookie of the the year co-winner.

The Avs have a six-day break between Saturday at Florida and the Oct. 28 game with Winnipeg.
