Gabriel Landeskog: Avs rookie ready to stack up in the NHL

"In this week's installment, Avs rookie winger Gabriel Landeskog, the No. 2 pick in this year's NHL draft, talks about his transition to the NHL and the players he's most looking forward to beating. Landeskog answered fans' questions this week after the Avs' annual Burgundy-White intrasquad scrimmage.

Being from Sweden and now part of the Avalanche, I am sure you've talked with Peter Forsberg?. If any, what kind of relationship do you have with him? What kind of advice has he given you? About the NHL or the Avs?

---Douglas, Aurora

Gabriel Landeskog: The fact is, I've only talked to him once and it was the day after the draft. He called to congratulate me and only told me great things about Denver as a city, and the Avalanche as an organization.

He told me to do whatever I can to make the team and have fun with it.

Gabriel, I saw you play in a couple of scrimmages on Saturday. What impressed and surprised me the most was your willingness to mix it up in front of the net with some bigger guys. Is this typical of what you think you'll bring to the Avs this season?

---Jay, Parker

Landeskog: Yeah, I think so. It's something I try to be good at. I try to be there because that's usually where I score a lot of my goals.

I have to go to the blue paint to get dirty and maybe get a tip or two. Being a bigger, stronger guy, I want to be that kind of player.

Gabriel, I was wondering how the level of play compares from Sweden to the OHL

--Jon, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Landeskog: The level of play from the Swedish junior league to the OHL was a big step for me. From playing in front of 50 of our team's parents back home in our junior league to a full house in Kitchener of 6,000 fans was something that took some time to adapt.

The game is a lot different here. It's a lot faster and more physical. I can't really speak for the NHL level, but from what I've seen and from what I've gathered talking to other players, it's a lot faster and you're playing against men.

It's going to be a higher level and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Who are you most looking forward to playing against in the NHL and why? And who are you looking forward to playing with?

---Carmela, Manila, Philippines

Landeskog: Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby would be a dream come true to play against because I've watched those guys for years.

One of the players I'm most excited to play against is Nicklas Lidstrom. He's a player that I've looked up to all of my childhood and he's also a big role model for my dad. That's going to be pretty cool.
