Should the Avalanche just shut down captain Gabe Landeskog for the rest of the season, even if he were to be feeling better these days after suffering a concussion last month?

Whether Landeskog is feeling better isn't known. The Avs don't let injured players talk to the media, and those close to him — including his agent, Peter Wallen — aren't saying anything about him publicly.

The Avs received seemingly good news Friday, when Landeskog skated on his own at the team's practice facility, the first time he's been on skates since taking a big hit from the San Jose Sharks' Brad Stuart during a Jan. 26 game.

But concussions and other brain injuries are nothing to take lightly. Come back before they are fully healed and suffer aggravation to the already-existing injury, and we're talking an even longer absence, maybe a career ender. There also is the player's long-term health to consider.
