Fun a big part of Smith's game plan

"Steve Smith took his three children to Dollywood this week.

He wanted to give his wife a break after a recent health scare. But he also wanted to ride the roller coasters and watch his kids splash down the water slides at Dolly Parton's theme park in the Smoky Mountains.

Smith, a Carolina Panthers receiver, likes having fun. He expects to enjoy his fourth annual football camp at Ardrey Kell High next week as much as the campers.

But last season was no fun for Smith, who had his worst statistical season for a team that went 2-14 and had the NFL's lowest-ranked offense. Catching passes is fun. Winning is better.

As he considers his post-lockout future, Smith, 32, wants to play for a team that expects to win now. Is that team the Panthers, who have a first-year coach and a rookie quarterback?

Smith is not sure.

"It's not about money. It's not about, 'He's not willing to do this. He's not willing to do that.' I just want to enjoy playing football. Win more than two games," Smith said Thursday in a phone interview. "Statistically, I'd like to achieve some things. But I don't want to achieve them and it be all about me.

"I would like to be in a situation where the team goals are so high that the personal goals, you'd have to set aside. Because you're doing so many things as a team that who cares about those other things? That's what I desire.""
