The moves follow the appointment at Craven Cottage of former Old Trafford coach Rene Meulensteen, who will work alongside manager Martin Jol in a bid to change the club’s fortunes and pull them out of the Premier League bottom three.

The Cottagers hope Meulensteen’s links with United will help seal a deal for the two players who are struggling for playing time under new manager David Moyes.

Newcastle are also interested in Zaha but Fulham, who have also been linked with a move to bring Seattle Sounders striker Clint Dempsey back to the club on a temporary basis, hope a move back to London will clinch the deal.

They have struggled for consistency and need a dramatic turnaround if they are to secure their top flight status for new owner Shahid Khan.
