Rick Renteria once joked about ordering Rosetta Stone tapes, so he could learn Japanese just in case the Cubs signed Masahiro Tanaka.

The manager didn’t need an interpreter after watching Kyuji Fujikawa throw from the mound on Monday at Cubs Park, where the 33-year-old reliever completed his first side session since having Tommy John surgery.

This marked a big step for Fujikawa, who saved more than 200 games in Japan and felt his right elbow “barking” during spring training last year. He wound up throwing only 12 innings for the Cubs before Dr. James Andrews did the reconstructive surgery last June.
