The Kansas City Royals announced Thursday that they have placed right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder impingement syndrome. Right-hander Kevin McCarthy was recalled from Triple-A to take Cahill’s spot on the active roster.

Cahill started Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, and it did not go well. The veteran lasted just 2.1 innings and surrendered three runs on four hits along with five walks. It marked the third time in three starts with the Royals that Cahill failed to pitch beyond the fifth inning. He has a bloated ERA of 8.18 through 11 innings of work with Kansas City.

Cahill was acquired from the San Diego Padres before the trade deadline in the deal that also landed relievers Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer in Kansas City. He has looked almost nothing like the player that pitched extremely well for the Padres through the first half of the season.
