Freeney's effect immeasurable

"Dwight Freeney's raw numbers in last Sunday's win over Jacksonville were easy to overlook because there were so few.

The Indianapolis Colts' five-time Pro Bowl defensive end finished with zero tackles, zero sacks and two pressures of Jaguars quarterback David Garrard.

"Stats," Freeney said with a crooked smile, "lie sometimes."

There was no better example than the Jacksonville game. Freeney seemed to be in the Jaguars backfield as much as Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew. He dominated left tackle Eugene Monroe.

In the third quarter with Jacksonville backed up inside its 20, Freeney beat Monroe, got in Garrard's face and forced a throwaway. Replays showed Garrard should have been penalized for intentional grounding. Later in the period, Freeney's up-the-middle pressure forced Garrard to deliver a high pass down the field that sailed over the hands of Jason Hill and was intercepted by safety Antoine Bethea.

Freeney continued to make life miserable for Monroe on one series midway through the fourth quarter. First, he bull-rushed Monroe into Garrard, forcing Garrard out of the pocket and into an errant throw. Then, he spun inside Monroe and left Garrard shaking his right hand in pain after it made contact with Freeney on the follow-through.

Twice, Monroe was penalized while trying to deal with Freeney."
