"Francisco Liriano, bothered on and off by a sore left shoulder since spring training, was placed on the disabled list Monday and will miss his next scheduled start.
The Twins were hoping Liriano could test the shoulder with a bullpen session today, but manager Ron Gardenhire said, "He still doesn't feel good enough."
So Anthony Swarzak, who pitched eight innings of one-hit baseball Saturday against the Angels, will start Thursday in Kansas City.
"It's just not to the point where he wants to throw a bullpen, or feels comfortable enough to throw one, so we'll just skip a start and go from there," Gardenhire said of Liriano. "It's nothing serious; it's getter better. It's just not working out."
The Twins were the last major league team to place a player on the disabled list this season, but since Tsuyoshi Nishioka went on April 8 with a broken leg, the Twins have added 10 more. Reliever Joe Nathan went on the DL on Friday because of tenderness in his surgically repaired right elbow.
To take Swarzak's spot in the bullpen, Anthony Slama was called up from Class AAA Rochester. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 3.70 earned-run average in 16 appearances with the Red Wings. He made his major league debut with the Twins late last season, going 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in five appearances.
Kubel injured: The Twins likely will be without Jason Kubel tonight because the right fielder sprained his left foot while jumping for Victor Martinez's game-tying, two-run homer Monday.
He was pulled from the game and had an X-ray, which revealed no broken bones. "
