Former NFL wide receiver Derrick Mason was arrested Monday in Nashville and charged with aggravated assault after an altercation with a woman he has been dating for about a year.

Mason turned himself in to police around 9:10 p.m. Monday and released at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday after posting bond, jail records show. He is charged with aggravated assault-strangulation and vandalism and is scheduled to appear in court next Monday.

According to an affidavit filed by Davidson County prosecutors, Mason arrived at the woman's house Monday morning and let himself in. The woman then told him she wanted to end the relationship, and the situation turned violent, with Mason allegedly grabbing her by the neck and slapping her with an open hand.
