"A Hall of Fame quarterback who played for four NFL teams, Warren Moon says he never forgot the first time a franchise chose to move on without him.
It was the Houston Oilers, who decided to trade Moon to the Vikings after he'd been named to his sixth straight Pro Bowl in 1993.
"Sometimes you feel like you're invincible. You feel like you've got everything going for you and you're irreplaceable," Moon said. "All of a sudden you get this big dose of reality."
Vince Young no doubt has similar feelings, Moon said. The Titans decided last week that Young is no longer their quarterback.
Moon, a 17-year NFL veteran, said Young should turn the situation to his advantage. He should take stock of himself to see why the Titans made their decision, embrace the fresh start he'll soon be granted, and channel his disappointment into motivation.
"It's a wake-up call when all of a sudden an organization gives up on you," said Moon, now an analyst on Seahawks radio broadcasts. "(You learn) that you're always expendable and that it's a business. But you better take advantage of whatever opportunity you're given, and you can't take it for granted.
"I think all those things will probably resonate through Vince's mind, and if this situation isn't doing it, hopefully people around him will make him understand that if you get a second opportunity, you have to make the most of it. I think he will."
Moon is a believer in the on-field potential of Young, who was 30-18 in his starts for the Titans, but said the fifth-year pro needs to find ways to deal with things like getting benched and booed.
"Maturity is the biggest thing he needs to keep improving on, how to handle adversity," Moon said. "If he can continue to do those two things and improve those two areas, I have no question about his football ability.""
