This time last week the Titans had 90 players.

They’re down to 65 after releasing 10 players Friday.

Now comes the hard part: deciding on the last 12 cuts to get down to the 53-player limit before the NFL deadline of 5 p.m. today.

“Debate is probably the best word to use” coach Mike Munchak said. “Everyone has an opinion.”

None of Friday’s moves was a big surprise though the release of running back Jalen Parmele officially made Jackie Battle the third-stringer behind Chris Johnson and Shonn Greene. The Titans still must decide whether they want to keep running back Darius Reynaud who is also a return man.

Battle a sixth-year pro signed with the Titans a day before training camp began.

“He has done a nice job” Munchak said. “That was a great competition we thought. Battle did a great job and he’s exactly what we’re looking for.

“He protects well and can play on special teams. … He stood out.”

The toughest decisions remaining are at wide receiver and perhaps quarterback.

Behind Nate Washington Kenny Britt Kendall Wright Damian Williams and Justin Hunter the Titans probably will keep a sixth wide receiver and maybe a seventh.

Michael Preston outperformed Marc Mariani during the offseason and training camp but Mariani provides something extra as a return man. Complicating matters: Mariani is still recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered in the first preseason game.
