The Philadelphia Flyers announced via the team's official Twitter account that Steve Mason would start in goal Wednesday as they open the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Mason 25 went 4-2-0 with a 1.90 goals-against average and .944 save percentage in seven games after arriving in Philadelphia following a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets in April.

After using a compliance buyout on Ilya Bryzgalov the Flyers signed Ray Emery in July and held an open competition for the starting job.

While Mason will get the start Wednesday no one should assume he's earned the No. 1 job. Coach Peter Laviolette said he had no reason to define a starter/backup role for Mason and Emery.
