Florida Marlins to endure another month without Josh Johnson

"Josh Johnson's timetable for a return to the rotation came into focus after Tuesday's game, when the Marlins placed him on the 60-day disabled list. The move was not the result of Johnson suffering any sort of setback. The Marlins simply needed the 40-man roster spot to add Elih Villanueva, who through three innings allowed eight runs on five hits and walked five against the Phillies.

Johnson will not be eligible to pitch any earlier than July 16, the third game after the All-Star break against the Cubs at Wrigley. Manager Edwin Rodriguez estimated Johnson would make at least two rehab starts.

"It's hard to take because he's the ace of the rotation," Rodriguez said. "We have to move on. I think the players are feeling that way. First it was two weeks, pretty much everybody was like we can handle that as a team. Now it's getting longer and I can see the players feeling that loss.

"He's moving in the right direction. He threw [off flat ground Tuesday] and felt fine…We laid out the whole plan of how we're going to build him up and he agreed with it."

Johnson has had his share of health issues, starting with Tommy John surgery and a back issue that sidelined him all of September last season. It's scertainly not because of his physical conditioning.

"If you point out anybody in the clubhouse that is a hard worker and keeps himself in good shape, that's Josh Johnson," Rodriguez said."
