Texas Rangers left fielder David Murphy faced Houston right-hander Bud Norris for the first time in his career in the opener. Facing pitchers that he has never seen before will be a common occurrence for Murphy this season.

Murphy will receive regular playing time against left-handers for the first time in his career. That means lots of video sessions and scouting-report reviews to prepare for facing unfamiliar left-handers.

“It’s not an uncomfortable feeling,” Murphy said of hitting against unknown pitchers. “It’s nice to know what a pitcher has. A scouting report can help, but a true scouting report for me is what I seen with my own eyes in the box.”

Murphy has double-figure career at-bats against 13 left-handers. He has had the most at-bats (16) against Jason Vargas of the Los Angeles Angels. Vargas is scheduled to face the Rangers on Friday. Murphy has one career hit against him.
