The 41-year-old quarterback filed his retirement papers with the NFL after completing his 20th season.

Favre has submitted his retirement papers before, only to manage to return to the field after being reinstated by the league. That seems unlikely to happen again, as he said repeatedly this season that he would not play again.

The formality has little impact on the Vikings, because Favre is no longer under contract and coach Leslie Frazier said he envisions no scenario in which he would call Favre and ask him to play next season."
