"A day after Fausto Carmona set off a bench-clearing altercation when he drilled Mark Teixeira in the back following a Curtis Granderson home run, the Indians pitcher did little to defuse the situation.
Speaking through his interpreter, Indians staff assistant Francisco Morales, Carmona said he did no wrong by plunking Teixeira, saying the pitch simply got away from him.
"I was trying to pitch inside," Carmona said. When asked if he expected the kind of reaction he got from Teixeira and the Yankees following the pitch, Carmona seemed defiant.
"(I) was ready for anything," Carmona said through Morales. "I threw a pitch and it hit him."
Carmona said he didn't know what Teixeira was yelling at him, but when told the Yankees first baseman said Carmona was throwing away against him for the last four to five years, Carmona said he "knows that so he tried to change the plan and went inside." Morales then added, "As much as Teixeira knows him he knows Teixeira, too."
Carmona, who appeared to become more agitated as the questioning continued, was asked if he thought Teixeira overreacted at being hit."
