"Scot Shields admitted to getting "a little bit" choked up in the clubhouse after the game Sunday.
Though he denied it at the time, Shields probably threw his last pitch on Sept. 7. He left that game after feeling discomfort in his pitching elbow. An MRI later revealed a strained muscle in his forearm and Shields was shut down for the rest of the season.
The last player from the Angels' 2002 World Series champions still with the team is likely to retire this off-season.
"Everything," Shields said when asked what he would miss. "Competing, going out there and facing the Derek Jeters, the A-Rods and competing against them. And working every day with the guys in here."
The 35-year-old Shields is eligible for free agency this winter and holds out the possibility that he would return to pitch again somewhere "if the situation is right." If not, he's ready to walk away."
