Coyotes prospect Max Domi missed out on his junior team’s season opener Friday but the alternative isn’t that bad.

Domi is still auditioning with the Coyotes for a roster spot and played with center Mike Ribeiro in Saturday’s preseason game against the Sharks in San Jose.

“It’s bizarre” Domi said. “It’s very weird especially home opener. It’s like the best game of the year. Unfortunately I’m not there but I’m glad they won.”

The Coyotes reduced their training-camp roster to 36 before Saturday’s game and another round of cuts is expected before the team departs today for a two-game road swing through western Canada.

Even though he’s only 18 years old Domi has regularly skated alongside veterans and some of the better impressions he’s made in camp have come during game action.

“This is the part of training camp where you have to stay calm and everyone kind of gets a little too excited” Domi said. “You’ve just got to relax and stick to your game and you’re here for a reason. So you’ve just got to keep doing what you’re doing and hope for the best.”
