ESPN's NFL draft redos aren't too kind to Lions

"Two weeks ago, NFL fans were fawning -- or frowning -- over their favorite team's draft picks. Of course, the true verdict of a draft class won't be known for a couple of years now. Hmm. So that would mean that it's more than fair to give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on the draft classes from, say, 2006-08. ESPN's Rick Reilly did just that. He took the first round draft picks from each of those years and, after getting advice from draft experts and using common football knowledge, re-drafted them to see which players panned out, which ones surprised and which ones flopped. From there, if the player gained or lost points based on the difference of the two draft spots. For instance, in the 2006 draft, Ravens defensive lineman Haloti Ngata was taken 12th. According to the re-draft, he'd be taken second, so he's a plus-10. So, in '06, the Lions took linebacker Ernie Sims with the ninth overall pick. Now, he'd be Pick 160 (Round 5), so he's a minus-151. In '07, the Lions did slightly better, selecting wide receiver Calvin Johnson second overall. But, this re-draft has Megatron going fourth, after Adrian Peterson, Darrelle Revis and Patrick Willis. So, Johnson is a minus-two. The following year, Detroit took offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus with the 20th pick. The re-draft has Cherilus getting skipped, making him a minus-235. But, the Lions picked defensive lineman Cliff Avril in the third round (92nd overall). Today, experts think he'd be the 20th pick in that class, good for a plus-72."
