"Despite Derek Anderson's abysmal numbers that would get most quarterbacks benched, Browns coach Eric Mangini is sticking with him over Brady Quinn.

"I think (Anderson) gives us the best chance right now to move the ball," said Mangini. "I know his numbers haven't been impressive, but he isn't alone in producing those numbers. There's been a significant amount of drops, there's been times where he had chances and there's been some breakdowns in protection. I've also seen him complete some balls that were well-thrown and well-caught."

Mangini cited a 21-yard throw to newly-acquired tight end Michael Gaines. The pass, zipped in against double coverage near the goal line, put the ball at the Packers' 1.

"It was a good throw, a good catch, in a place where only [Gaines] could get it," said Mangini. "There's been a lot of those. I've seen him complete those plays not just in games, but also in practice."

Despite those flashes, Anderson is last in the NFL with a 40.6 passer rating, and 31st in third-down passing. On third down, he is 17-of-50 with one touchdown and five interceptions for a 10.3 rating.

What's more, the Browns have scored only four offensive touchdowns in 81 possessions this season, with three of them coming in Anderson's 19 quarters of work.

Is it possible, then, that Mangini is eschewing Quinn so he doesn't take 70 percent of the snaps, a number that would trigger $10.9 million in contract escalators? Quinn has played 10 quarters, and would need to play about 45 to hit 70%. With 36 quarters remaining, he could still reach 70 percent if they started him this week. If they wait until after the bye, he has virtually no chance."
