Elbow will force Lowe to miss his next start Friday in Florida

"Derek Lowe will not make his scheduled start Friday in Florida because he's still being bothered by a sore elbow.

He's hoping he will only have to skip one start and then can return to the rotation but for now inflammation in the back of his elbow will force him to skip a start for the first time in his 14-year career.

"It's your turn to pitch, and I've never missed one, but you've got to be honest with yourself and you've got to be true to your team," Lowe said. "And what I did last Sunday (vs. the Marlins) was pointless. …if you're going to pitch like that, it's not worth it. It's better for everyone right now to take a break."

The Braves will turn to Kenshin Kawakami, who was just recalled from Gwinnett and hasn't started for the Braves since June 26 against the Tigers.

Lowe got a cortisone shot following his outing Sunday against the Marlins, when he allowed five runs in a season-low three innings. He acknowledged a couple of days later he's been battling elbow soreness for the past six weeks.

He said it felt better on Tuesday but by Wednesday, it was bothering him to the point where he didn't even throw a scheduled 30-pitch bullpen to test it."
