"RHP Jason Isringhausen fought back from injury to pitch for the Rays. Now the club has lost him for at least a while.
The veteran reliever threw a wild pitch to Corey Patterson with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning and stepped off the mound in obvious pain. RHP Lance Cormier replaced him and got the final out in an 8-3 victory against the Nationals.
"He felt something in his elbow," Manager Joe Maddon said. "There's concern. He's really starting to throw the ball well, and there's concern."
The Rays said late Saturday they will put him on the disabled list and bring up RHP Winston Abreu from Triple-A Durham.
A former closer with the A's and Cardinals, Isringhausen had elbow surgery Sept. 12. He signed with the Rays as a minor-league free agent and is 0-1 with a 2.04 ERA.
Isringhausen was not available for comment after the game.
Abreu, 32, is a longtime minor-leaguer who pitched briefly for Baltimore and Washington, and he is 3-1 with a 1.41 ERA and 10 saves at Durham.
Running wild
With five stolen bases Friday night (they added two Saturday), the Rays eclipsed 100 for the season. They became the quickest team (63 games) since the 1991 Expos (62 games) and the quickest AL team since the 1982 A's (56) to reach 100.
Only five major-league teams (three AL) since 1954 have reached 100 steals earlier in the calendar year than the Rays did."
